IEM

January 10, 2009

If you play at church, then you probably know what an IEM.
IEMs and PODs – two great tastes that taste great together! You get the feeling of playing in a bubble and the fake amp latency!
ugh In Ear Monitors. Do we have to?
Yes, says the worship pastor and soundguy. We can really lower our stage volume and clean up the mix!
How else are you going to hear the click and the loops and backing tracks (it didn’t turn out so well for Milli Vanilli)…
If you’re used to the feel of hearing the rest of the band through monitors/wedges, the single driver IEM is not going to do it
My rhythm tone has been pretty good but the lead tone is meh.
Honestly, sometimes you need the tone to hit those Lincoln Brewster solos note for note.
The three places that I’ve played with IEMs did not have room mics–which would have added back the live feeling that you get for free with wedges.
If you have an extra $800 sitting around, the dual driver IEM could work for you.
I’d rather think about buying one and half Lovetone pedals off ebay.
I have $150 into custom molds for futuresonics so at least they won’t fall out of my ears every song.

I took a innovation/design class last year at Haas/Berkeley and they showed the Shure business case for the first IEM.
This is how it was presented:
The business problem: Musicians are harming their ears with loud volumes. What can we do to help them?

What I heard: Listen up team. We need to sell more schtuff to make our numbers this year. What else can we sell to the “musicians” who buy SM-57s and SM-58s? It would be nice if project “Pete Townsend” is NPV positive as well. Wow these graphics are really 90’s looking. Can you grunge up that font a little more?

Add a IEM processor to the list and you have the multiple revenue streams thing working for you! If you = dbx! Let’s monetize this thing!

If it weren’t for IEMs, then we wouldn’t have this: a bootleg of the Edge’s IEM mix from 2005 (recently posted on U2 recording yahoo group). Listen to the multiple countoffs (computerized voice – one two one two three four) on City of Blinding Lights! Hear the Edge’s background vocals louder than Bono’s! Where did Adam’s bass go?!
Do any churches do countoffs/section reminders on the backing tracks?
